Selecting ‘Browse Locations’ will take you to a screen where you can select any available diocese from the drop-down menu at the top left of the red banner. This will generate in the left hand column a list of all locations under the jurisdiction of its bishop.

For convenience, in the initial view all you will see are the categories of locations found in the diocese and the number of each type. To examine any of these subsections in detail, click on the toggle to the left of each heading. If necessary, you can use the scroll bar to navigate extended lists.

The first category, ‘Parish (church)’, lists all parishes in alphabetical order, with parochial chapels and parish schools (also listed as a group further below) being listed under the relevant parish. To see the records for these, however, you will need to toggle the '+' sign next to the parish name in question. A parish with no chapels or schools has no toggle. There then follow diocesan offices, cathedral offices, domestic chaplains, proprietary chapels, extra-parochial chapels, schools, hospitals, gaols, parish schools, chantries, town offices and foreign churches. Select a location by clicking on it. A Location Record is then displayed in the Location Display Window.

Each Location Record begins with a summary of the location’s context: the county in which it lies, and both its jurisdictional and geographic context. This can be toggled on and off to hide this information. Under 'Location History', a toggle next allows access to a tabular account of changes to the location’s context and structure in the period covered by the database. Below this is displayed a summary list of all records relating to that location. This list can be re-sorted using the tabs at the top of each column in any case where there are more than five items. For parishes it will include summary entries relating to all clergy who served the living, whether rectors, vicars or curates. For schools it will include summary entries relating to all masters, under-masters, or ushers who were employed. The full details for any particular entry can then be viewed by clicking on ‘View’ at the right-hand side of the summary entry. The full details will appear in the pop-up Record Window.

It is possible to scroll up and down in the Location and Record Windows. At any point, you can select another location by using the alphabetical list on the left-hand side of the Location Index screen. Please note in the top-left of the Location screen the unique CCEd Location ID which identifies the location and helps to distinguish it from similarly named locations in the Database. This is important for citation purposes. On the top right of the Location Display Window is a box labelled ‘Retrieve Record’ where you can enter a CCEd Location ID to retrieve records for other locations for which you know the number.
